A few plain culinary sesame seeds are unlikely to harm most healthy adult dogs, but there is little reason to feed them deliberately. A scattered topping is different from a bowl of seeds, a spoonful of tahini, sesame oil, hummus, seasoned snacks, moldy bulk product, or an allergic reaction. Identify the sesame form first Sesame…
Dogs should not be fed watermelon rind because its tough, fibrous texture can cause choking, vomiting, or gastrointestinal obstruction. Rind is not a chemical poison, so the response depends on the swallowed piece, dog’s size, chewing, symptoms, and time; a scraped sliver and a missing wedge are not the same emergency. First decide whether rind…
Dogs should not be fed raw chicken as a casual meal or treat because it can carry bacteria that sicken dogs or people, raw bones can choke or injure, and chicken alone is not a complete diet. If your dog just stole some, the amount, bones, packaging, symptoms, and household health risks determine the next…
Dogs need sodium in a complete diet, but they should not be given extra salt. A few crumbs of an ordinary salty snack are different from eating table salt, salt dough, brine, deicer, or drinking seawater; concentrated exposure or neurologic signs require urgent veterinary advice, and water correction must not become a do-it-yourself experiment. Sodium…
A tiny culinary amount of turmeric in otherwise dog-safe food is unlikely to poison most dogs, but turmeric is not a proven treatment. Capsules, extracts, oils, “golden paste,” and enhanced-absorption products create different doses and interaction questions, so do not use them for arthritis, cancer, inflammation, or another illness without the dog’s veterinarian reviewing the…
Dogs should not get salami as a regular treat. One thin, plain slice is usually a very different problem from a stolen package, but salami can pack a surprising amount of salt, fat, garlic, onion, pepper, and other seasonings into a few bites. The quick decision guide Save the wrapper and note the product name,…
Plain culinary cilantro is generally considered non-toxic to dogs, and a few clean leaves are unlikely to cause trouble. The bigger questions are whether the plant is really cilantro, how much was eaten, whether tough stems were swallowed, and what else came with it in salsa, guacamole, sauce, extract, or oil. A quick answer by…
Plain culinary avocado oil is not the same exposure as chewing avocado leaves, peel, or a pit, but it is still not a useful dog supplement. The practical problem is its concentrated fat and calories, especially after a bottle spill, a large lick, or exposure in a dog prone to pancreatitis. The short answer by…
Most dogs can eat a small amount of familiar edible squash when it is cooked until soft and served plain. Remove hard rind, stem, and mature seeds, cut the flesh into bite-size pieces, and never offer a bitter-tasting or unidentified ornamental gourd. What counts as squash? Squash is a broad kitchen label for fruits in…
Dogs can usually eat a few small pieces of plain green bell pepper, raw or gently cooked, but green hot peppers are a different food. Remove the stem and core, cut the crisp flesh for the dog’s size, and skip spicy peppers, seasoned dishes, stuffed peppers, sauces, and whole-pepper games. First identify which green pepper…
